Department Overview

The Department of Languages embodies two units: the English Language Unit and the Ghanaian Languages Unit. Our courses focus on producing competent, innovative, and transformative language teachers for the basic schools. Our mode of delivery is guided by the philosophy that language thrives in a social milieu. Hence, the teaching and learning of language should follow learner-centered approaches to support pre-service teachers in developing both content and pedagogical knowledge, enabling them to transition smoothly from college to the field of work. Guided by our vision statement, “To be among the best departments in the Colleges of Education in Ghana, producing world-class graduates and scholars well-versed in language studies and teaching,” we strive for excellence in all aspects of language education. We train pre-service teachers to take up important roles in teaching and to provide solutions in all aspects of life where language and literacy proficiency are relevant. Our doors are open to all stakeholders to support the promotion of multilingual education within our multilingual society. To the 2025 graduands, the department congratulates you on your successful completion of your programme of study at St. Teresa’s College of Education (TERESCO) during your four years of academic and practical training.
